Trying to learn Icelandic, but it's not as easy as I thought it'd be..

How are you learning Icelandic? I've always wanted to.
I'm Canadian and don't come from a linguistic background that would facilitate it as well as Norwegian might, but Iceland is one of the few places that really attracts me. I just haven't been able to find Icelandic courses locally. It would be language six for me, but French, Spanish, Russian, and Cree don't really seem like they'd help much with Icelandic.

I wouldn't think it'd be easy. My girlfriend said she had a horrible time with it and she speaks Danish. For myself, my girlfriend attempting to give me Danish lessons mainly seems to serve to amuse her with my terrible American accent.

I'm using google and youtube if I'm honest. If/When you know some Norwegian that's pretty much all you need. I'm just trying to find someone on Oppo from Iceland to confirm that I pronounce this shit the way it should. :)

I am constantly amused by how you all talk about each other. You're not that far apart you know. You'd be states over here.

Hehe, we're just havin' fun though :) If you live in Wisconsin you'd have something to say about Texans I guess :)

Makes sense to me. I just come from a state with a superiority complex and terrible traffic laws (Virginia). If we're outside of the Northern part of the state we really only get offended when we're told we're not really a part of the South.

Let's put it this way, Norwegians speak BBC English, Danes speak Texas English (In truth we speak a bastardized danish in Norway though, but yeah)

Ha ha ha. Yeah. She said she'd compare Norway to New Jersey English and Denmark to Washington D.C. English. For myself, I just hope I can eventually acquire some degree of fluency.

I guess she's right (girlfriends tend to be :P) Tell your girlfriend I say "God dag, ha en fin helg."

Will do once she gets through her grading. I heard they might eventually make versions of Influent for all the European languages, so that might help if they do that. It's helped me some with Spanish for my Mexican students (though my Spanish is still extremely minimal.) Good luck.

The two Swedes that were on a tour bus with us in Iceland could be understood by the Icelanders, but couldn't understand what the Icelander's had to say. They were confused, too.
It's only a 10th century Scandahoovian language root - shouldn't be a problem if you know 20th century Scandahoovian, right?
(We learned some tourist phrases for our 2.5 week trip there. I remember, very clearly, that not a single one of them made any sense to us. Several other language tourist phrase studies did make sense.)

I hear it occasionally here in Germany. It sounds like this: gfryklplky hrwsknlp bfgwqskt.
Nailed it.
